Golden Retrievers were originally bred in the Scottish Highlands as working dogs. They accompanied hunters on their expeditions and were trained to find and gently carry back shot game like water fowl to their masters. An important part of their job was to bring back fowl without damaging them.
Besides being very intelligent, Retrievers are playful and generally approach life with a happy attitude. This is what makes them very popular as family dogs. Retrievers are also in plenty of demand for several occupations – they are trained as guide dogs, for search-and-rescue operations and emotional support dogs.
